Airbrush makeup has been popular ever since the 1930s when MGM studios employed the method on hundreds of extras appearing in the movie “Ben Hur.” Since then, the technique has been refined to the point that you can now get the same fantastic results at home in your own bathroom.

To get started, you will need to have an airbrush, an air compressor, special foundation makeup for airbrushing,  and a mask to protect sensitive areas of your face like the eyes. It is also best to have someone assist you with the process since it is necessary to keep your eyes closed while the makeup is being sprayed on your face.

It is a good idea to experiment with colors ahead of time by spraying them on a sheet of clean paper. The effect will not be exactly the same as on human skin but it will be close enough to give you a good idea of what the finished product will look like.

The makeup is applied in layers and the idea is to start with a light coat of makeup and add layers as needed. Use a controlled, light touch with the airbrush wand for each layer and make sure the area is completely dry before you apply the next one. Remember, you can always add more layers to achieve a richer color but you cannot remove color without starting all over.

The vertical area of the face between the forehead and the chin is known as the T-zone and since this area is typically oily, you are likely to need more coverage in this area. Carefully review any instructional materials that were included with your airbrush makeup kit to make sure that you safely execute the application process.

With the tools available today, it has never been easier to put your best face forward.
